Australian Muscle Car Masters

The inaugural Australian Muscle Car Magazine Masters was held at Eastern Creek Raceway on Sunday 30th October 2005. Despite the incessant heavy rain it was a huge success. This is now an annual event and the 2009 event will be held on the Father's Day weekend (5-6 September) at Eastern Creek.

Stewart and Wendy Wilson drove from Bungendore (near Canberra) to Sydney for our sister magazine's inaugural event. We found ourselves travelling north with many 'muscle' cars obviously heading in the same direction as ourselves.

Sunday dawned grey and wet. We didn't have any wet weather gear only an umbrella in the boot. We were amazed at the number of cars queueing to get into Eastern Creek. We got drowned getting from the car to the pits and all the wonderful cars on display. All from our era of motor racing.

One of the first cars we spotted belonged to a good friend we hadn't seen for ages. A Benson & Hedges BMW M3 which was raced successfully by Tony Longhurst. Next we spied Alan Moffat's Mustang and Alan Moffat himself with a long queue of people waiting for him to sign memoriabillia.

We couldn't dodge Kevin Bartlett (sorry Kev!) or his trusty Camaro. He was looking for right hand ..... so he could race the car later in the day even though he didn't have proper wet weather tyres. It was a typical 'Big Rev Kev' drive and entertained the crowd immensely.

Wendy well remembers Kevin coming to rest, upside down, at her feet in this very car at Bathurst in 1982. He quickly got into the spirit of things with a beer from the cheering crowd!

We saw so many motor racing friends whom we hadn't seen for years. They all said the same thing, "We haven't been near a race circuit since it stopped being fun. It is wonderful to see the old cars, drivers and friends again. We'll be back next year for sure." We couldn't agree more.

So many well known racing drivers attended and signed so much memoriabillia for enthusiasts. They included Bob Jane, Harry Firth, Colin Bond, Bob Morris, Leo Geoghegan, John Goss, Fred Gibson, John Harvey, John French, Jim Hunter and John Sheppard (who Stewart interviewed live about the Holden Dealer Team).

Peter Brock had to win the award for being the most patient and spending the most time with his fans - more than 3 hours straight in the media room. That didn't include the signing he did beside his HDT A9X Torana in the pits.

If you didn't attend the 2005, 2006 or 2007 Masters then you must be at the 2008 Australian Muscle Car Magazine Masters on Father's Day at Eastern Creek Raceway. I'm sure we'll be there with bells on checking out the cars!
